Safety, Awareness & Escape Fundamentals for Kids and Parents

Welcome to the first module of our Free Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Online Course. In this course, you and your child will learn the absolute fundamentals of BJJ and self-defence, with a focus on safety, body control, and emotional empowerment.

This is the perfect starting point for beginners or young students who have never set foot on the mats.

Introduction – What This Course Is All About

Instructor: Coach Xavier

In this welcoming introduction, Coach Xavier shares the mission of the course — to help parents and children train together at home in a way that’s fun, practical, and empowering.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why self-defence matters for kids in real life
  • How parents can be active training partners (no experience needed!)
  • What you'll need: just your body, your child, and a safe space to train

This course is about building connection as much as confidence.

Breakfalls & Tapping Out – Safety First

What you’ll learn:

  1. How to fall safely (Breakfall technique):
    • Tuck the chin to protect the head
    • Don’t stick the arms out — slap the mat instead
    • How to practice from the ground and from standing
  2. How to signal discomfort (Tapping out):
    • How to tap with hands, feet, or voice
    • Why tapping out is important in training
    • When and how to stop when someone taps

Why it matters: Most injuries happen not from fighting — but from falling. These two simple skills form the safety foundation for all future BJJ techniques.

Breaking the Grips – Escape with Confidence

What you’ll learn:

A simple but powerful self-defence drill: how to break free when someone grabs your wrist or shirt.

Key Concepts Covered:

  • Grab your own hand and pull toward your chest while stepping back
  • Practice both arms to build coordination and muscle memory
  • Use fun, timed games like “10 seconds to break free” to keep kids engaged

Bonus Drill: If you're unable to break the grip, drop low and wrap your arms around the attacker’s legs. It’s an entry into a takedown — safely and decisively.

Tip for parents: Add “levels” and games to build confidence while reinforcing good technique under pressure.
